Uses of the Acai Plant

acai plant

While the use of the Acai berry in order to improve the health in general has been very well documented, it seems that some uses of the plant are not so well known. First and foremost, the utilization of the Acai berry for health benefits is simplistically obvious, as the berry itself is a strong antioxidant and increases the health of the individual and reduces the effects of aging.

With so much attention being paid to the general health of individuals eating the food and utilizing the berry to make juice, it is easy to overlook the utilization of other materials for different products. Naturally, when a product is so famous for being healthy, it is easy to overlook some its other uses and consider it to be a one trick pony.

This is not the case, as there are all manner of different types of uses for the entire plant, not just the berry itself. Apart from these regular usages there are certain medicinal benefits of acai. In Brazil they consider the acai berry as a good treatment for diarrhea and diabetes. Regular intake of the acai berry products like the pulp, juice or extract provides a number of health benefits. It improves digestion, helps in sound sleep, enhances the immunity system, prevents cancer and premature aging and definitely aids in detoxification.

The fruit itself is a small, round, blackish purple ball similar to a grape but with much less pulp and is produced on branches of around 700 to 900 fruit each. Two crops of the fruit are produced each year and provides a tremendous amount of income for the natives in the area.

The outside of the fruit is a deep purple collar or green depending on the product and its maturity while the interior is pulpy and thin with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or slightly less. The seed is 80% or more of the fruit itself. Naturally, the berries are harvested as food and sold throughout the world as a healthy product that can increase the health of the user. Acai fruit is the commonest and most popularly used part of the acai tree. The fruit is pretty rich in nutritional elements. In the Amazon region in Brazil where they grow, the Acai berry is utilized in almost 42% of all food, obviously very popular and consumed by many individuals.

The Acai berry is often combined with all kinds of different products, such as ice cream, granola, salt or sugar or other sweeteners. With so much variety and the ubiquity of use, it seems only natural that the extremely popular product would increase its reach beyond the local area and into all sectors of the world as a frozen or freeze dried product. The pulp and juice of the fruit is a favorite breakfast food for many people. The delicious flavor of acai berry is exploited in different recipes like smoothies, ice-creams, powder and many more. Acai berry is also taken with granola and the dried acai powder is used to bring flavors to the desserts. Did you know that the salads served in many South American restaurants contain a soft part of the acai berry stem? But the product itself has other commercial uses besides simple food and berries.

The plant itself is used for all types of different products, while the berry is used mainly for food. The berries also serve as dyes for coloring clothing, and to add unique flavoring to food. The acai berries can be dried and dyed different colors to make bio-jewelry, or jewelry made from renewable materials found in the Amazon Rain Forest. These dried berries are used as beads for necklace, bracelets and earrings. The leaves are often made into hats, woven with extreme skill by natives in the area and sold on a regular basis to tourists and locals alike.

The leaves can also form all kinds of woven materials such as mats, brooms, roof thatch and even baskets. With this woven technique, there is no end of use for the leaves from the very popular plant. The acai berry leaves are pinnate leaves and they often grow from a crown shaft at the top of the long tree. The leaves grow in clusters and look really beautiful. Now the leaves of acai palm have numerous usages. The natives of the rainforest region are having adequate expertise and experience is weaving the leaves. They make attractive stuffs with these leaves and they are quite durable as well. The trunk itself, Palm wood that is valued everywhere, is used in all methods of building construction and other types of suitable uses.

Considering that is extremely resistant to insects, it only makes sense for this type of product to be employed in the rain forest on a frequent and regular basis due to the high amount of insect infestation in the area. The trunk of matured acai berry trees is resistant to harmful pests and termites. This is the reason why acai palm wood is used in manufacturing furniture or in building constructions. The usage of this wood is preferred in places like the rainforest itself as the chance of insect infestation is higher.

The seed of acai berry occupies about 90% of the fruit. This is a stone solid substance and no one can think of eating it. Hence this is the common idea that the acai seeds are absolutely useless. This might be true from the consumer’s point of view but for the harvesters the acai seeds are pretty useful. After the pulp is extracted the seeds are used for planting more acai trees. Seeds are can also be used to grow new palm trees which will perform seedlings in a few months under the right growing conditions. Each seed can give rise to one plant that can develop about 20 individual stems from the same base. This increases the acai berry production. So the seeds are probably the most important part of acai berry. The seed of acai is also used as the organic nutrient for other plants. The crushed acai seeds make popular food for livestock. The seeds are quite often ground up and used for food for livestock or as a component of soil for organically grown plants. Its leaves are used to create hats, brooms and mats. It is also utilized for creating roof thatch for homes and making pest-resistant trunk wood.

Though it is too early to comment on the benefit of the products, it cannot be denied that Acai can create right the kind of waves in its natural form.
